Magnesium Glycinate: Why the Form Matters More Than the Label

Most people who take a magnesium supplement have no idea which form they're taking — and it matters more than almost anything else on the label.

Not all magnesium is created equal

The cheapest, most common form on supplement shelves is magnesium oxide. It's inexpensive to produce, which is exactly why it's everywhere — in multivitamins, budget supplements, and fortified foods. The problem is absorption: magnesium oxide has a low bioavailability, meaning a large percentage of it passes through the body largely unused. It's also known for a laxative effect at higher doses, which is a sign the body isn't absorbing it well in the first place.

Magnesium glycinate is different. It's magnesium bonded to glycine, an amino acid your body already uses for tissue repair and nervous system function. That bond makes the magnesium significantly more bioavailable — your body can actually absorb and use more of it — and it's gentler on digestion, without the same laxative effect other forms are known for.

Why most people are low on magnesium without realizing it

Magnesium plays a role in muscle recovery, nervous system regulation, and sleep quality, but modern diets — heavy on processed food and light on the whole foods that naturally contain it — leave a lot of people running a quiet deficit. The fix isn't necessarily "take more magnesium." It's taking a form your body can actually use.

Where it fits into whole food

That's why we add magnesium glycinate to every ReCrea8 pint rather than a cheaper form like magnesium oxide. Each pint delivers roughly 135–150mg of magnesium, about 30–35% of the Daily Value, in a form your body can actually absorb, alongside the magnesium already present in whole milk, cream and cacao.
